Riley Biehl

My origins begin with my education through Seattle University’s Creative Writing and Journalism programs, where I’ve learned to combine the art of storytelling with the science of detailing information. Since graduation, I’ve honed these skills and gained a wealth of experience across a wide-ranging career in copywriting crafting emails, banner ads, landing pages, long and short-form, direct-response copy, creative narratives, and everything in-between.

By day I am a mild-mannered copywriter but by night I write my own comic books in pursuit of a passion I’ve had since childhood. I am the writer and co-creator of the comic book series Miranda in the Maelstrom. I wrote each of the six 22-page scripts, recruited collaborators, oversaw artwork production, managed release schedules, coordinated with the publisher, and marketed to readers and comic book stores via an email and social media campaign. Creating and publishing an independent comic book really demonstrates the type of drive, resilience, project juggling, conceptual execution skills, passion, and collaborator management that also makes a great copywriter. I would recommend you order a copy but the collected paperback currently sold out on Amazon!

While working as a Product Copywriter for the online retailer Zulily.com, I quickly became the copy department’s go-to menswear, technical, and footwear expert and was routinely requested by the buying teams to work on projects with in-depth technical features. My research skills and attention to detail eventually got me promoted to Editorial Copywriter where I helped grow the company’s brand voice across the retail website and online catalog.

As a Marketing Copywriter for GreaterGood.org/Charity USA, I managed, tested, and scheduled 12-20 email campaigns a day, blasting 365 days a year using industry-standard platforms Selligent, Mailchimp and Strongview for our network of charity sites. I also analyzed campaign performance through AB testing, revenue, and click-through rates to make data-driven marketing decisions, while collaborating with buying teams, third-party clients, graphic designers, and other writers.

More recently I worked with Microsoft as the Copywriter on the Modern Life and Devices team, crafting copy for consumer-facing products, Windows lock screen content, software updates, internal notifications, and employee newsletters. This wide range of topics and audiences requires me to regularly pivot from copy that explains complex technology to consumer audiences in an easy-to-understand format to tech-heavy copy for an internal campaign. I’m particularly proud of a multi-surface campaign promoting Microsoft Copilot as “Your AI Companion” where I drafted feature-focused copy for the Windows Lock Screen, Emails, surface notifications, and landing pages. We saw a 28% increase with unengaged users and a 32% increase with lapsed users being driven to the Copilot home page.

Telling stories and creating experiences through writing is my talent and I pride myself on an unwavering commitment to the craft, while possessing a strong sense of humor that I rely on to keep myself and others entertained.  Thank you for visiting my online portfolio!
